Welcome to the Hendrick Family; Hendrick Manufacturing Company, Hendrick Architectural Products, Hendrick Screen Company, and Hendrick Metal Products. Each is ISO 9001-2008 Certified and Dedicated to Providing Cutting-Edge Metal Solutions.

The Original Company, HENDRICK MANUFACTURING COMPANY, was established in 1876 in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, (situated about 10 miles from Scranton, PA) by Its Founder, Eli Hendrick.

Not afraid to take risks, as a young man, Eli Hendrick had served as a Pony Express courier in the Iowa Territory and was always alert to new opportunities. Eli Hendrick recognized the value in perforating sheet metal for the developing oil and coal industries in Pennsylvania. Separating-screens and filters had formerly been constructed of wire interwoven into cloth and canvas. After limited use, the wire abraded and pierced the canvas, creating tears and holes which greatly reduced its separating and sorting abilities.

Mr. Hendrick initially devised a method of drilling individual holes in sheets of metal by using a battery of drill presses; soon thereafter, he improved upon his concept by simultaneously punching holes in the metal by means of a die-set with multiple punches; and the concept of efficient metal perforation was born. His Patent for this innovation, on display in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., served as the pilot for the modern day All-Across Press.

The functionality of perforated metal was quickly seized upon, and industries of all stripes, from Aggregate to Aerospace; from Food Production to Waste Disposal; from Power Generation, where noxious particulates are “scrubbed” from exhaust gases, to Acoustics, whereby perforated metal may be designed to be fully transparent or to filter specific frequencies or merely to re-direct sound waves adapted ever expanding possibilities allowed by a multiplicity of hole patterns, variable open areas, and dissimilar media (metals and plastics) of varying thickness to achieve their objectives.

Eli Hendrick found a means to serve his country, again, through innovation during World War II. Profile Screens, absolutely vital to numerous American industries, having been imported, were embargoed by Germany as contraband, and Mr. Hendrick began manufacturing them in the United States shortly after the commencement of the war in order to fill the critical need.

HENDRICK SCREEN COMPANY was founded as a separate entity in Owensboro, Kentucky, in 1974, to manufacture profile screens for the oil and coal industries in West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. Today, Hendrick Screen Company serves thousands of customers domestically and internationally, exporting its products to more than 35 countries. Today, Hendrick Screen Company is THE ONLY AMERICAN MANUFACTURER producing the full complement of wedge wire, profile wire, and looped wire screens UNDER ONE ROOF. Hendrick‘ s wire screens are available in a wealth of Materials, Sizes, Shapes, Patterns, and Open Areas. Screens can be fabricated from stainless steel, titanium, copper nickel, and other corrosive and heat resistant alloys in any quantity from 1 to many thousands. No minimum, no limit.

Hendrick Screen Company serves Water Intake, Waste Water, Fishery, Petrochemical, Pulp and Paper, Food and Beverage, Agriculture, Original Equipment Manufacturers, among other industries, and most recently, Architectural.

Several years ago, Hendrick Screen Company saw the need to accommodate the burgeoning Architectural Market which had discovered Custom Profile Wire Screens and Wedge Wire Screens .Working hand-in-hand with Architects and Designers, Hendrick offers the highest quality custom profile screens for both practical and decorative applications.

HENDRICK ARCHITECTURAL COMPANY was formed several years ago in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, to seamlessly interweave the tried and true functionality of perforated metals with the aesthetic and environmental promise of evolving Green Technologies. Operating from Carbondale, Pennsylvania, out of the same facility as Hendrick Manufacturing Company, in-house architects and engineers draw expertise from a history of Innovation, manufacturing and production spanning more than 130 years. Working with perforated metals to CONSERVE energy by protecting buildings from direct sunlight; MODERNIZE the facades of outdated buildings; CONCEAL rooftop appliances or garbage receptacles from public view; PREVENT life threatening “blind spots “within parking garages and other public areas; PORTRAY a company’s image with elegant, unique signage; SHIELD patrons from the elements with perforated metal rain screens; PROTECT against slips and falls by strategically-placed entrance grilles and grating; and DRESS-UP board rooms and interior offices with custom laser-cut wall panels or distinctive “Metal-Art“. Hendrick Provides Cutting Edge Metal Solutions which promote and satisfy Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. LEED, With Hendrick At Your Side.

Should you determine that your Engineering Department could “use a little” assistance in moving your fabricated metal product from the Planning Room to the Production Floor, HENDRICK METAL PRODUCTS, Elgin, Illinois, the fourth sibling of The Hendrick Family, may afford an attractive option.
Wheatland Tube is part of JMC Steel Group, the largest manufacturer of steel pipe and tube in North America, adding Hollow Structural Sections (HSS) to the all encompassing product mix.

Wheatland Tube is a Sister Company and an integral member of JMC Steel Group which includes Atlas Tube (Hollow Structural Sections a.k.a. HSS), Energex Tube (Oil Country Tubular Goods, a.k.a. OCTG, and Line Pipe), and Picoma Industries, Inc. (Electrical Conduit Fittings).

Strategic acquisitions have transformed JMC Steel Group into the largest, strongest and most modern independent manufacturer of steel pipe and tube in North America. With two plants in Canada and ten plants in The United States, JMC Steel Group is able to offer the full range of steel pipe and tubular products to diverse industries throughout North America.

Storied names like The International Conduit Company, Laclede Steel, The Sawhill Tubular Division of AK Steel, Sharon Steel, Maverick Tube, Copperweld, and Energex Tube have been successfully merged under one corporate umbrella.

Few other companies epitomize the Vision, Synergy and American Experience as well as does the history of Wheatland Tube.

Founded in 1877 near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by John Maneely, an enterprising Irish immigrant, The John Maneely Company grew into the largest distributor of pipe and fittings in the Northeastern United States.

But, this was just the beginning for Wheatland Tube.

Seeing an opportunity to supply steel pipe to an energetic and growing young nation, John ‘s youngest son, Edward, built a manufacturing plant in Wheatland , Pennsylvania (60 miles northwest of Pittsburgh) in the late 1920’s; close to rich deposits of iron ore and coal and proximate to an expanding network of railroad lines which criss-crossed the burgeoning steel- making area of western Pennsylvania .

Operating as a subsidiary of The John Maneely Company, Wheatland Tube welded its first length of steel pipe in 1931 by employing a variation of the Bell and Tong process; thin sheets of steel were heated and then drawn through a cone – shaped opening whereupon the edges of the steel were curled into a cylindrical shape, and thereafter pressed together and welded to form a pipe.

In 1963, after many years of making steel pipe “the old fashioned way”, Wheatland Tube purchased a modern Aetna Continuous Weld Mill which allowed a continuous ribbon of steel strip to be converted into pipe (the continuous coil of strip entered the furnace where it was heated to a temperature sufficient to form the steel into an oval so that the edges of the heated skelp could be heated to an even higher temperature and pressed together by welding rolls to form a forged weld). Improved variations of the Continuous Weld process are still used today to manufacture steel pipe. Wheatland Tube is the sole producer of Continuous Weld pipe in The United States.

In 1969, The John Maneely Company, evolved again, acquiring the assets of International Conduit Company of Chicago, Illinois, including Wheatland’s first Electric Resistance Weld (ERW) tube mill, the prevailing manufacturing process for welding mechanical tubing.

In 1997, The John Maneely Company made yet another investment in people and capital, christening The Wheatland Mechanical Tube Division at Its sprawling manufacturing plant near Chicago, Illinois , formerly dedicated to the production of electrical metal tubing (a.k.a. EMT).

With its eyes ever fixed on the horizon, The John Maneely Company made its most significant and accretive purchase in 2000, when it bought the Sawhill Tubular Division from AK Steel, including mills in Wheatland, Pennsylvania; Sharon, Pennsylvania; and Warren, Ohio. The aggregated capacity of these three plants allowed Wheatland Tube to produce Continuous Weld pipe, Electric Resistance Weld (ERW) tube, and Drawn Over Mandrel mechanical tubing (DOM) from four manufacturing plants (including its original tube mill in Wheatland, Pennsylvania) within a 50 Mile radius.

In 2006, Carlyle Group, having a decided bias toward Value, recognized the inherent worth in the synergies of a greatly expanded Wheatland Tube and acquired the formidable pipe and tube producer from John Maneely Company.

In 2005 , the founders of Atlas Tube (Hollow Structural Sections – a.k.a. HSS) had purchased the HSS capabilities (plants and equipment) from competitors Maverick Tube and Copperweld, emerging, almost overnight, as the predominant producer of Hollow Structural Sections in North America.

Always on the hunt, Carlyle Group purchased Atlas Tube, including the combined HSS capacity of Maverick Tube and Copperweld in 2006 and, in a separate transaction consummated in 2007, acquired the assets of Sharon Tube , Sharon Pennsylvania, including Sharon’s Continuous Weld pipe mills. JMC Steel Group, through its purchase of Wheatland’s interest in Sawhill Tube and Sharon Tube, thereby became the only American manufacturer of Continuous Weld pipe.

In 2010, Carlyle Group merged Wheatland Tube, Atlas Tube, and Sharon Tube under one all encompassing corporate umbrella and changed the name of the consolidated companies to JMC Steel Group.

Finally, in 2011, the founders of Atlas Tube re-acquired Carlyle Group’s interest in JMC Steel Group. Once again, the largest independent manufacturer of steel pipe and tube in North America was “back in the hands” of committed “Steel People”.

JMC Steel Group — Remember Their Names: Wheatland Tube, International Conduit Company, Laclede Steel, The Sawhill Tubular Division of AK Steel, Atlas Tube, Copperweld, Maverick Tube, Sharon Tube, Energex Tube. — Twelve manufacturing plants in North America (Ten of Which Are Strategically Situated For Our Customers’ Benefit Within The United States) producing more than two and one-half million tons of steel pipe and tube annually. One company, forged from many.

Always Alert and Responsive to the Needs of Its Customers, JMC Steel Group is pleased to announce yet another major investment in People, Plant, and Capital.

The Wheatland Tube division of JMC Steel Group is well underway in doubling the size of its Church Street plant in Wheatland, Pennsylvania. The ongoing expansion will increase Wheatland ‘s Drawn Over Mandrel (DOM) capabilities across the full range of existing sizes and enlarge O.D. capabilities from 6.50” to 9.00” in diameter. Production is scheduled to commence in early 2013.

JMC Steel Group. Grounded in 1877. Growing Stronger into the 21st Century.

Thank You for Your Interest in JMC Steel Group.

Stainless steel is generally defined as an iron – based alloy containing more than 11 % chromium , being the minimum amount necessary to form a protective layer of chromium oxide on the surface of the metal .

T – 201 has seen service for a number of years as a viable alternative to T – 301 and T – 304 stainless steels in the construction of railroad cars , architectural uses such as interior handrails ; elevator cabs ; appliances ; washing machines ; machine frames ; and in various food service related applications such as restaurant equipment , beverage dispensers and ice machines .

Better grades of T - 201 will typically contain at least 16 % chromium and 3 1/2 % to 5 1/2 % nickel and 5 1/2 % to 7 1/2 % manganese . The manganese content is increased to offset the reduction in nickel content from ” 8.00 % – 11.00 % to 3.50 % – 5.50 % ” .

A representative high – grade T – 201 stainless steel might be expected to contain the following chemical content :

C : 0.150 % Max
Mn : 5.500 % – 7.500 %
P : 0.060 % Max.
S : 0.030 % Max.
Si : 1.000 % Max .
Cr : 16.000 % – 18.00 %
Ni : 3.500 % – 5.50 %
N : 0.250 % Max.
Fe : Balance

Unfortunately , there is no laboratory test that can predict whether a UNS S 20100 material will perform differently than a Type 304 material in a given application .Existing standard corrosion tests are usually aggressive and will cause corrosion in both T – 304 and T – 201 stainless steels.

The only way to know for certain if the T – 201 stainless steel will perform satisfactorily in a given environment is to make trial products and expose them to service in corrosion atmospheres of varying degree .

We would be very appreciative if those of you who have personal experience with the use of T – 201 stainless steel in the manufacture of your product would be gracious enough to offer the benefit of your experience .

Thank you very much for your consideration and sharing.

The first commercial steel pipe was made by welding discarded musket barrels together , end to end . In 1815 , William Murdock had invented a coal burning lamp system ; he used the continuous welded pipeline of musket barrels to transport coal gas throughout London . This allowed shops and factories to remain open longer than previously when lamps / candles had been lighted by oil or tallow . The demand for increased quantities of welded pipe ushered in a variety of innovations for developing new pipe and tube processes and birthed the welded and seamless pipe industries of today .

American Stainless Tubing, Inc. (ASTI) manufactures its ornamental stainless steel tubing to ASTM Specification A-554, which governs round , square , rectangular, and specialty shaped stainless steel tubing for use in structural applications where appearance , mechanical properties , or corrosion resistance is necessary.

American Stainless Tubing , Inc., Troutman, North Carolina, U.S.A., is the Standard Bearer for the ornamental stainless steel tubing industry.

In the 1970‘s, its three Founders formed Romac Metals, Inc., and pioneered the development of mechanically buffed, mirror-finish stainless steel tubing for furniture and marine applications . Prior to their innovation , only polished ( grit ) stainless steel tubing — with all of its attendant maintenance problems — had been available to ornamental stainless steel tubing users on a commercial scale .

Romac Meta , Inc. quickly became “ the People to Call “ for a high – quality, “ mirror ” surface finish . After a very successful tenure as the predominant ornamental stainless steel tubing mill in the United States , and arguably , the entire world , the Founders sold their company and moved to the ” greener pastures “ of semi-retirement . Yeh , well —

In the early Twenty-First Century, the three Founders were again “ struck by the need to do something meaningful with their lives ” . An , American Stainless Tubing , Inc. was born . Once again , ornamental stainless tubing users had a reliable , quality, service-oriented supplier.

American Stainless Tubing , Inc. acquired Romac Metals , Inc. out of Bankruptcy shortly thereafter. Romac Metal , Inc. had been muddling along after being acquired by a succession of owners who had proven to be more highly skilled at RUINING a business than at RUNNING one .

Today, American Stainless Tubing , Inc. continues to fulfill the promise of its Founders:

To produce the widest and deepest selection of the highest quality, defect – free ornamental stainless steel tubing available from One Very Dependable Source - offering repeatable , reliable fabricating properties - Time After Time After Time .

To accomplish its mandate , ASTI :

Uses only Prime , Domestic stainless steel coil while maintaining the most stringent quality control standards for accepting/rejecting wide – band coil from its suppliers .

Offers the most complete selection of Round , Square , Rectangular, and Specialty Shapes available from any stainless steel tubing mill .

Offers a full array of surface finishes : as-welded (2B) ; a full range of grit polishes from 180 grit through 320 grit ; pre – buff (400 grit ; Super Buff ( ASTI ‘s “ Standard ” mirror – finish ) ; ASTI ‘s patented Linear Buff ( # 8 Finish ) and ASTI‘s patented Linear Grit Polish ( often used to “ blend “ high – end appliance handles with grit polished sheet ) . Asti ’s People will work with your designers and engineers to develop “ the look you want “ or match a surface finish which you are currently receiving from another supplier — perhaps from half – way around the world .

Carries a constant and expansive inventory of both wide – band coil stock And as – welded ( 2B ) round tubing to assure short – term lead times for its valued customers . The as – welded round can then be quickly routed through one of ASTI ‘s two manufacturing plants where it can be polished ( grit ) or buffed ( mirror ) , shaped , cut-to-length , etc., depending upon Your particular material requirement .

Continually monitors all aspects of its operations includin , but not limited to , the meticulous maintenance of its production equipment ; continuous testing , evaluation , and addition of new feedstock materials ( such as cutting and color compound , buffing wheels , polishing belts , etc. ) to improve ASTI ‘s manufactured product ; intensive and ongoing employee training ; and the nurturing of close , longstanding relationships with trusted vendors .

Offers “ Grass Roots “ support to its customers through a national network of Independent Outside Sales Representatives , most of whom have been associated with ASTI since its inception , and with Romac Metals , Inc., before it was acquired by ASTI .

Offers longer lengths of stainless steel tubing than are typically stocked / sold by the Industry and cut – to – length pieces and optimum lengths to save its customers fabrication and handling expenses and help to reduce unnecessary scrap .

Provides Engineering and Manufacturing expertise to its customers so that they may offer new and improved stainless steel tubing solutions to a world hungry for products .

And , above all things , values the relationships that have been built with its customers over the years , and those which will be developed with its new customers for generations to come .

ASTI has a history of quality and service stretching back three generations and a mission to live up to that promise .

Corey Steel Company, founded in 1924 in Cicero, Illinois, is a predominant manufacturer of cold-drawn and cold-finished carbon steel and alloy bar. Products are produced in conformance to ASTM Specification A-108.Originally conceived as a full-line Service Center to supply ferrous and non-ferrous metals to machine shops and fabricators in and around Chicago, Corey installed its first drawing line in the 1950‘s to produce cold-drawn and cold-finished carbon steel and alloy bar.Today, Corey Steel Company occupies more than 600,000 square feet of manufacturing and warehouse space under roof, including a modern 110, 000 square – foot addition which houses drawing lines designed to produce cold-drawn bar directly from hot-rolled coil in diameters from 1/4“ to 2“. This capability affords Corey the flexibility to quickly convert hot-rolled coil deliveries into bar; Corey can better regulate its inventories and meet the critical JIT demands of its valued customers. Corey can also draw cold-finished bar up to 4” in diameter from individually fed bar stock .

The manufacturing process begins with the hot – rolled coil brought from the storage area , which is loaded onto one of two vertical uncoilers, threaded into a vertical and horizontal hot-roll pre-straightener then fed into a shot-blasting machine to remove any rust and scale from the surface of the as-rolled raw coil stock. As the cleaned, pre-staightened coil exits the shot-blasting machine, it feeds through a funnel in the white dividing wall (purposely painted white to emphasize the importance of cleanliness) directly into a continuous in-line drawing machine, thereby having isolated the uncoiling and cleaning operations from future downstream operations.

The cleaned, hot-rolled, pre-straightened coil is drawn through a die to a specific English or Metric diameter, straightened again (the second time), magnetically tested for any surface imperfections, sheared into bars of a pre-determined length, straightened (a third time) ,faced to ensure a square face for easy in-feed , chamfered ( if by customer request ) and bundled.

The bundle of cut-to-length cold-drawn bar is accumulated with others and moved from the end of the drawing line by overhead crane , either to the bar storage area or transferred to adjacent buildings for further downstream processing (such as testing, turning, grinding, polishing, or cutting). The process is fully automated; the cold-drawn bar having not been touched by an operator since the raw hot-rolled coil was loaded onto the un-coiler in the coil prep area.

To produce a cold-finished bar of the highest quality, it is imperative that its surface be free of scale, dust, grit, grime or any other contaminants, at all times; handling should be held to an absolute minimum.

Corey has taken great care to ensure that all of the necessary lubricants utilized during the drawing operations and the rust preventative administered during the final ( third ) bar straightening operation are kept as pure as possible. To this end, each drawing line has its own Centrifuge which continuously filters the working fluids to guard against contamination and keep the surface of the bar clean at all times.

Corey has invested heavily to “keep the lines running”. Each major piece of machinery on each cold-finishing line has its own Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). If a control-related problem occurs, only the one line is affected. All other lines continue to run unimpeded.

Each cold-finishing line has its own substation and transformer located in a sealed, climate-controlled penthouse above the production floor. If a malfunction impacts one line, only it is affected. All other lines continue to run unimpeded.

Each line has an independent diagnostic capability. If a problem occurs, a laptop can be hooked-up to the diagnostic and the problem located and the repairs quickly made.

As a leading supplier to an industry which requires products with size and concentricity tolerances as exact as four ten-thousandths of an inch, Corey has invested millions of dollars on finishing equipment in recent years to perfect its manufacturing processes. A doubling of its capacity to grind small diameters; an investment in sawing technology which allows Corey to produce a square cut, which when the bar is straightened for the final time, results in a smooth flat end and reduces the amount of material the customer has to face-off before using the bar; other saw-cutting improvements which allow Corey to cut bars to non-standard lengths for its customers on demand; the 110,000 square foot addition and its new drawing lines, mentioned herein above; continuous monitoring and adjustments to its substantial inventory; and Corey‘s deep rooted and perpetual commitment to you.

Why Corey ?

An Extensive Product Line of English and Metric Sizes.

The Highest Quality Cold – Finished Bars Available.

Large Inventories.

Reliable, Attentive, Customer Support.

Continuous Improvement of Processes and Products.

A Familiarity With Your Business and A History of Service.

Still ever mindful of its roots, Corey Steel stocks a broad and deep inventory of the various common grades of Aluminum, Brass, High Leaded Brass, Bronze, and Leaded Nickel Silver
to support and complement its carbon steel and alloy drawing capabilities.

Thank You for Your Interest in Corey Steel Company.
We are at Your Service.

Primary Contact: Liz Jones

American Spincast of Belton, Texas, has been manufacturing centrifugal cast tubing (a species of “hollow bar“) for critical global markets since 1982; to support its foundry operations and better serve the time-sensitive industries which rely upon it, American Spincast stocks more than 90 different alloys in its appurtenant, wholly-owned Service Center, Amstock Supply, for rapid turn-around delivery.

Great Customer Service! But, what is a Centrifugal Casting?

“Centrifugal“ derives from the Latin “centrum” for “center” and “fugere” for “to flee”, hence, literally, “to flee the center”.

A centrifugal casting is made by pouring molten metal into a rapidly spinning mold. Impurities, inclusions and other dross, being less dense (“lighter ”) than the metal itself, are forced (“float”) to the inside of the rotating centrifuge, where they can easily be machined away.

Since “densification“ is directional, as the casting cools, it solidifies from the outside toward the inside bore of the mold. The centrifugal process increases both the density and mechanical properties of the casting by promoting a uniform metallurgical micro-structure.

American Spincast services such demanding industries as Aircraft, Chemical, Machine Shop, Oil Field Equipment, Petrochemical, Power Generation, Pulp and Paper, Pump and Valve, and Ship Building.

American Spincast offers centrifugal castings poured to a specified size in 2 – 3 weeks .

For a reasonable “break in“ fee, Your Order can be produced and shipped within one week.

Same Day Shipping is Available if your Order is Placed Before 3:00 PM, C.S.T., from more than 250,000 lbs of in-house inventory from Amstock Supply .

Thank You for Choosing American Spincast.

Hendrick Manufacturing Company, Founded in 1876 in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, by Entrepreneur and Innovator Eli Hendrick, was established to manufacture filtering devices that could grade and separate raw materials (feedstock) for the fledgling oil and coal industries. His invention, perforated metal screens, funded in part by products that he sold to Standard Oil Company, and subsequently secured by U. S. Patent, used multiple punches and dies to simultaneously punch holes in sheet metal.

His seminal design served as the pilot for the modern All-Across Perforating Press and birthed an industry which cooks your food; drys your clothes; cools and heats your home; safeguards you against slips and falls; protects your computer against thermal overload; purifies the air you breathe; cleans the water you drink; mitigates or eliminates potentially damaging noise; enhances music while you read; separates, washes, and drys the agricultural products that feed the world; and grades much of the energy that drives the world’s industrial engines.

Continually, new uses for perforated metals, perforated plastics, and perforated paper are engineered into products to improve the Quality of Life and Hendrick Manufacturing Company Is Ready And Proud to Provide Cutting Edge Metal Solutions. The People of Hendrick Manufacturing Company Daily Perpetuate the Vision of Their Founder.

The Best Lead Times In The Industry

Hendrick manufactures perforated product 7 days each week, 24 hours every day, to ensure the most prompt, reliable deliveries in the Industry, allowing its valued Customers to maintain leaner inventories and thereby reduce or eliminate unnecessary money-draining handling and storage, preserve capital, maximize the productivity of their personnel, minimize damage and waste, and more deliberately schedule shipments from other vendors.

Unsurpassed Customer Service

Hendrick ‘s Estimators and Inside Sales Representatives work closely with Customer ‘ s Purchasing Managers to quickly process Quote Requests and Return a formal Acknowledgment (normally within hours); where Shop Drawings are required, Hendrick ‘s Inside Sales Department characteristically turns them around within 24-48 hours after receipt of Customer ‘ s prints. I have been told by a number of Customers that they had over cautiously factored in a turn-around time no better than 2-3 weeks to receive Shop Drawings and were most favorably surprised that Hendrick could react so quickly. In many cases the expeditious handling of Drawings won the order for our Customer and allowed Hendrick to satisfy their perforated requirement. Please call Hendrick. Hendrick will deliver timely, time after time.

In-House Tooling And Engineering

Hendrick Manufacturing Company designs and makes its own tooling. This allows for In-house Quality Control; more rapid “Tooling-up “and faster delivery of prototype and production pieces; better Cost Management ; and exponential growth of manufacturing expertise at Hendrick . Engineers and Production Managers are available to carry Hendrick ‘s knowledge and experience to their Customers and do, routinely, assist their Customers with the design, refinement, or even reverse engineering of their Customer s ‘ products.
Hendrick ‘s personnel often play an integral part collaborating with outside sources of value-added services such as heat-treating, painting, plating, anodizing, etc. Customers are encouraged to bring their problems to Hendrick. Customer visits to Hendrick ‘s plant are heartily welcomed and encouraged

Solid, Long Term Customer Relations

Regional Salesmen; a well-traveled, knowledgeable National Sales Manager; responsive Customer Service Representatives — (just wait until you have the pleasure of working with Kate) — supported by a battery of engineers, designers, estimators, purchasing staff, a fully operational In-house tool room; traffic department; production managers and well-trained and committed shop personnel); and a national network of Outside Sales Representatives work in cooperation with each other to make certain that Hendrick ‘s Customers are promptly attended to and that Hendrick Manufacturing is the Perforator upon whom You can depend.

“Round And Round” and Much, Much More…

Hendrick Manufacturing Company, “The First Perforator”, maintains Tooling for Thousands of Hole Patterns. In-house tooling can usually satisfy your mechanical requirements even if Hendrick does not have the exact hole pattern that your design initially specifies. By varying the size and orientation of blank areas, the center to center distance between holes, hole size, hole shape, pattern or configuration of the holes (Straight, Staggered, etc.), size and location of margins, and other dynamics of layout (such as different sized holes and different shapes of holes within the same sheet), Hendrick can offer virtually unlimited “Open Area ” possibilities. Please consult with your Customer Service Representative to help you determine the Open Area Percentage which will best satisfy your mechanical requirement.

Round Holes

Straight Line/Offset With a 45 Degree Stagger/Offset With a 60 Degree Stagger (the strongest, most available, most utilized and most economical hole configuration). According to The Industrial Perforators Association (IPA), round holes ranging from.020 “to 6 ” and over account for 80 % of perforated production.

Slotted Holes

Straight Line/Side (by side offset) Stagger/End (to end offset) Stagger/Slotted Hole with Square Corners. Slotted perforations are particularly well suited to grading and sizing solid objects, for example, ball bearings; a single dimension of the object to be “graded” determines the depth of the slot. Through-put is determined by the width of the slot.

Hendrick Architectural Division can Laser Cut Specialty Designs, such as Custom Signage and Your Company Logo and work in partnership with your Architects to blend Art with Function to create “Metal Art“ for almost any Venue. The Laser does not require an extensive inventory of tooling and offers much greater flexibility of design. It also may allow the use of materials not commonly perforated by the All-Across Press or Turret Press, such as plastics and rubber. It offers greater clarity of image-based perforations because the variety and size of perforations are virtually limitless. The Laser can process material with almost no scratches or marks and is best suited for one-offs and unique designs and prototypes.

Hendrick may be a particularly good resource for the Architect because Hendrick has created a Division dedicated solely for Architectural applications and has at its disposal all the expertise and capital equipment necessary to produce the full array of perforated products: All-Across (MP) Presses, CNC ( Computer Numerical Control ) Turret Presses, and Laser.

An Abundance of Materials

Modern Man requires a wealth of products made from many diverse materials. From light weight aluminum and titanium used in Transcontinental aircraft; to corrosion-resistant stainless steels used in medical devices which remain inert despite contact with body fluids; to tough, impact and wear-resistant High Strength, Low Alloy (HSLA) carbon steels which withstand the harsh pounding and abrasion of rock and ore against metal to yield gold for wedding bands and watch bands; to kitchen appliances which cook a meal in minutes; to the washer and dryer which have replaced the washtub and clothes line; to airbags, filters, door panels, exhaust systems, speakers, and batteries in futuristic vehicles; to the super alloys, carbon fibers, and nano particles being dreamed up in clandestine research labs and in engineering departments at storied universities the world over. And Perforated Products Will Help to Fill the World’s Insatiable Hunger for Innovation.

Hendrick Manufacturing Perforates:

Cold Roll Steel

Hot Roll, Pickled and Oiled Steel (HRPO)

High Strength, Low Alloy Steel (HSLA)

Weathering Steel

Galvanized Steel

Stainless Steel

Aluminum

Galvalume ( R )

Brass

Copper

Copper-Nickel

Certain Exotic Metals

Powder Coated and Painted Metals

Assorted Plastics

Some Paper Products

One Caveat regarding the Hardness of material to be perforated: The IPA recommends that hardness be kept below 80 Rb (Rockwell B).
Tolerances for Heat Treated material to be perforated, for Full Through Hardness, should be kept within the range of +/- 20 Brinell, total, for Commercial Quality AND +/- 15 Brinell, total, for Superior Quality.

When harder, more abrasion-resistant materials are required (for example, to size and grade aggregate) Hendrick can perforate heavy gauge sheet or plate for your job, then send your material locally to one of its longtime suppliers for subsequent heat treatment. Heat Treatment can offer a harder outer surface and a softer, more ductile core. Other treatments, such as carbonitriding, may further increase surface hardness.

Heat treated perforated metal plates, positioned one above another, with offsetting hole patterns to prevent “pass through“, and separated by intervening layers of filler material, may prove to be a lighter weight, more shock-absorbent option than thicker, single layer, non-perforated plate when used as armor plating.

As another option which is gaining popularity in the mining and aggregate industries, Hendrick can furnish perforated plate with a shock resistant/sound reducing perforated Rubber Mat overlay.

Please take notice of the above comments regarding Material Hardness and Heat Treated Through Hardness when perforating harder materials and heat treated materials.

Please discuss your material requirements with Hendrick ‘s Customer Service Representatives — They will be pleased to accommodate your needs.

“Through Thick and Thin”

Hendrick can perforate Plate up to 3/4“ thick; Sheet; Strip; and Foil.
Widths to 60“ can be perforated on Hendrick’s All-Across Presses.
It is possible that widths exceeding 60“ may be accommodated through other means of production. Please Ask.
Hendrick can perforate material in strip, sheet or coil up to 20, 000# and can perforate and process coil to coil.
Hendrick can also supply perforated “Blanks“ or even, “Finished“ pre-formed and welded parts , including perforated cylinders made from plate.
Please Ask Your Customer Service Representative for Specifics; there may be limitations dependent upon type of metal and tooling.
Please note that the smallest “hole“ possible to perforate may vary with the type of material and thickness. A General Rule of Thumb to be considered is that the hole diameter should not be less than the thickness of the material. The closer the 1 : 1 relationship is approached, the higher the probability of tool failure, the greater the press tonnage needed, and the more numerous the precautions needed to guard against failure. For stainless steels and other higher strength materials, it is advisable to drop at least one additional thickness gauge thinner than hole diameter.
These factors can increase the cost of production.

One Size Does Not Fit All – Many Different Hole Sizes/Shapes Are Available to Offer Varying Open Area Percentages

Hole Sizes for Round Holes are offered from .020“ in Diameter, to 6“ in Diameter.
Tooling is available to offer Open Area Percentage (OA%) from Ranges of 5% and less, to 63%, or more.
Many Open Area Percentages are also available in Square, Slotted, Hexagonal and Hendrick ‘s other Perforated Patterns. One Hexagonal Design allows for an OA% of 79% .
The IPA warns that extreme open area proportions tend to increase distortion, and advises that, if possible, that the User stay below 70%.

Open Area is commonly called out as Open Area Percentage (Blank Space between Perforations) or for very Small Holes, the Number of Holes Per Square Inch (HPSI).
Formulas are available to calculate the Open Area for the various hole shapes and sizes.

To Calculate the Open Area Percentage of the Slotted Hole Patterns, One Will Have to Determine the Center to Center Dimension of the Long Dimension of the Slots. This May be Accomplished by Adding 1/2 of the Length of Two Adjoining Slots (or the Whole Length of One Slot) and Then Measuring the Distance Between The Ends of Each Slot and Adding This Distance to the Total of the Two Halves (or Whole Length of One Slot). The Other Dimensions Necessary to Calculate Open Area Percentage: Width of Slot; Length of Slot; and Center to Center Distance Between The Width Dimensions of the Slots Are Typically Provided. The Dimensions and Equation Necessary to Calculate Open Area Percentages Are Set Out Herein Below.

Please, Always Ask Your Customer Service Representative When You are Seeking Guidance About Open Areas. Much Can Be Done to Accommodate Your “Open Area” Requirement.

The True Beauty is in Perforated Metal‘s DNA – One Piece Design

Perforated Metal allows its user to benefit from One-Piece Design.
Orientation of holes (Straight, Stagger), hole shape, hole size, use of more than one shape and or size of hole, blank spaces and margins, in seemingly unlimited combination , can be manipulated and configured to create a singular part with multiple functions. A barrier on one hand / a filter on the other; an enclosure for protection on the one hand, a passageway for the diffusion of damaging heat on the other; an architectural facade on the one hand, a gateway for sound containment or projection on the other.

One-Piece Design can facilitate fabrication or reduce and even eliminate the necessity for other metal working operations. Single-part construction provides added strength. Fasteners, adhesives, and welding which might otherwise be needed to join disparate metal parts can be eliminated. Cleaning operations can be performed more easily and with greater reliability. Recesses and hidden areas where particulates, germs , and bacteria might gather or where corrosion might gain a foothold can be prevented. Forming and bending operations are easier if only one piece of metal is to be fabricated. Anodizing, Painting, Polishing and subsequent clean – up and touch-up operations can be simplified or done away with entirely. Heat Affected Zones (HAZ) can be eliminated inasmuch as perforation is a mechanical, cold working process. Overall aesthetic appearance may be improved.

In-House Value-Added Services

Bending: Plastic deformation of a piece of sheet metal or plate subjected to an external load applied perpendicularly to the surface. “V“ Shape; “U“ Shape; “L“ Shape; or Channels are typically produced by use of a Brake . Hendrick can bend perforated sheet and plate, incorporating blank and perforated areas, alike, into a semi-finished part ready for final assembly.

Bolt Holes: Hendrick can sight-in and introduce bolt holes of varying shapes, sizes into your perforated product, in advance of further fabrication, so that they will be correctly aligned for further assembly, whether the finished part is to have a flat, contoured, or formed profile. This seemingly “Simple“ strategy may eliminate a lot of “head scratching“ and re-work at the back end of your job.

Deburring: The Perforating Process uses Punches and Dies with exacting tolerances to make holes in sheet metal and plate. The punch “is pushed“ downward about 1/3 of the distance into the material thickness with a force that builds up until the Shear Strength of the material is exceeded, at which time the material fails, and the punch “breaks out“ through the remaining 2/3 of the material.
The perforating process necessarily leaves very small burrs on the underside of the material. These burrs may be rolled back into the perforations if the sheet is subsequently roller leveled. Should your application require a burr tolerance which exceeds IPA Standard Tolerances, please discuss the particulars with your Customer Service Representative. Please be aware that Hendrick has developed specialized processes for the Commercial Laundry Industry which virtually eliminate burrs which might otherwise snag and catch materials inside the dryer. These specialized processes, developed by Hendrick‘s engineering and production personnel and unique to Hendrick, can be applied to enhance other products and markets.

De-greasing: Perforating requires the use of oils and lubricants because of friction generated by the process in punching holes through metal . The natural surface condition after perforating may vary from a light to heavy concentration and is shipped in that condition unless otherwise specified .
Hendrick can furnish a de – greased product which removes solvents for a nominal charge.

Forming: The straining of material, usually flat sheet or strip, by moving it around a straight axis in a neutral plane so that the metal’s contour retains a permanent set. Material flow takes place within the plastic range of the subject metal. Forming operations might include flattening or shaping sheet metal into a handle or lid.
Embossed Holes – Hendrick Manufacturing Company can fabricate Custom – Sized Floor Grates with perforated embossed and perforated recessed holes , as needed , to allow for superior drainage and slip resistance. Holes can be introduced in varying sizes or shapes and can be embossed or not in varying patterns ( For example : Alternating embossed and recessed perforated holes). The grates can be cut -to-size to the customer’s length and width and formed and welded as needed . ” Finger ” holes can be introduced into the grate to allow for easy removal from the otherwise flat surface for cleaning .

Notching: Removing material (as a “Cut-Out“) from the edge or corner of sheet, strip, plate or a part, to facilitate hanging, joining, or a “pass through“. Hendrick maintains a bank of sophisticated Notching Dies with which to engineer strategically placed cut-outs into your perforated product.

“ PEM “ Insertion: A “PEM“ nut is a Brand Name and Registered Trademark of Penn Engineering & Manufacturing Corp. The Generic Name is “Self-Clinching Nut“. The Self-Clinching Nut is an internally threaded fastener which, when pressed into ductile metal under pressure, displaces the metal around the hole, causing it to cold flow into a specially designed annular recess of the fastener, thereby helping to lock the fastener in place. A specially engineered locking ring surrounds the fastener and prevents rotation of the fastener in the hole. Self-Clinching Nuts are widely used in sheet metal fabrication where the material thickness is too thin to thread. Should you desire insertion of Self-Clinching Nuts, please ask your Customer Service Representative.

Polishing: Generally, the perforating process, because of the use of metal punches and metal dies against a metal surface, will impart surface scratches as the sheet or plate is run through the press. Even CNC Presses (Computer Numerical Control “ Trumpf ” Presses) may leave superficial scratches on the bare metal which may not be acceptable to the most discriminating eye of the Architect or Designer for Cosmetic Applications; Decorative Handrails, Interior Wall Panels, Custom Signage, other “Metal-Art“, and the like.

What Can Be Done To Protect The Surface During Perforating Or Restore The Surface Condition After Perforating?

FIRST, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, Discuss Your Cosmetic Application With Hendrick‘s Customer Service Representative. He or She has a wealth of experience and knowledge about perforating in general and Hendrick ‘s processes and capabilities, in particular. If you will provide the details for your intended use, Hendrick can suggest the most cost effective and pragmatic solutions.

For example, Hendrick had one Customer who said that he needed material for powder coated Privacy Screens and specified that “Only Cosmetic Application Quality“ material was to be used. After some very pointed questions and answers, Hendrick‘s Inside Sales Lady ascertained that the product was to be sand-blasted after perforation, then powder coated black and ultimately installed high atop a roof, visible only from afar. Needless to say, hardly a “Cosmetic Application“. But First, Kate had to glean the facts from her customer before she could offer the best solution at a substantial cost savings for him.

Will Only One Side Or Will Both Front And Back Of The Finished Product Be Visible To The Public?

Hendrick can “bring in material“ that is PVC coated on one or both sides, as necessary. Lighting Customers typically require Only One (1) “Good Side“, so sheet can be PVC‘d on the Exterior Side only, at a significant cost and time savings to Hendrick‘s Customer, since superficial scratches on the Interior Side are of no practical significance.

The Type Of Perforating Press Upon Which Your Job Is To Be Run Will Weigh Heavily On The Surface Of Your Final Product. CNC Presses, inasmuch as they process material more slowly and more deliberately, though at a somewhat higher cost, are normally used for Cosmetic Applications because they safeguard the surface of the material better than does an All Across Press.

Secondary Operations Can Enhance The Surface Of The Material After Perforating.

Hendrick can Debur and Polish the material by “cleaning up“ and “polishing out“ many of the superficial surface imperfections. The deburred and polished sheet can then be PVC‘d on one or both sides for protection during shipment to the job site and final installation. This procedure was suggested by Hendrick‘s Customer Service Representatives and Production Personnel and has been adopted by several of Hendrick‘s Architectural Fabricators.

The Type And Thickness Of The Material To Be Perforated Are Very Critical To The Appearance Of The Finished Product.

The surface condition of heavy gauge stainless steel sheet and plate (3/16ths and heavier ), for example, as produced by the Mills, does not lend itself to those secondary operations which Hendrick might otherwise employ, after perforating, to “Polish out“ scratches and other surface imperfections on thinner gauge materials because the lighter gauges generally “Come In The Door“ to Hendrick with a superior (2-B “Satin“) surface finish.

Your Bottom Line Is Critical To Your Success And To Hendrick‘s Desire To Be YOUR PERFORATOR. If you invest the time to enlighten Hendrick‘s Customer Service Representatives to your intended use, they, in cooperation with Hendrick‘s Manufacturing And Production Professionals, With Feedback From Hendrick‘s Architectural Division, and with input from Hendrick‘s network of vendors, will identify and provide the optimum product for your particular need, at the Best Value.

Roller Leveling: When metal is perforated, it stretches ever so slightly with each downward stroke of the press as the material undergoes some strain or work hardening as the punches contact, then shear and break out through the material. The perforating process naturally curls any material resulting in a slight warp or bow unless corrected. Roller Leveling perforated flat stock is a bending process that deforms the material by passing it through a series of upper and lower sets of leveling rollers. The flat stock advances through the Roller Leveler in a wave-like path. The “wave“ is greatest at the point of entry and gradually lessens or “flattens“ toward the exit, similar to a decreasing sinusoidal curve. The elastic-plastic alternate bends and the constant reduction of bending intensity result in flatter and less stressed material. Margins, especially large or uneven margins may accentuate the deviation from flatness necessarily caused by the perforating process. Margins may cause a deviation exceeding those Flatness Tolerances for sheets or plates with No or Minimum margins as tabulated by The International Perforator’s Association in its published handbook, Designers, Specifiers, and Buyers Handbook. The Customer should always be cognizant of the effect of large or uneven margins on flatness and should always discuss his options with Hendrick. Hendrick can Roller Level your material after perforation to restore much of the flatness to the material. Flatness Tolerances of Roller Leveled material after perforating are specified in the IPA Handbook. Should your order require “special“ Flatness Tolerances, consult with Hendrick‘s Customer Service Representative.

Above picture is intended only to demonstrate how roller leveling might be accomplished - it is not an accurate graphic of Hendrick ‘s sophisticated equipment or process.

Rolling: Process by which sheet or plate is passed through rollers to produce a cylindrically shaped product. Hendrick can supply perforated products in sheet and plate form varying in curvature from a gentle roll of a few degrees to a full 360 degrees. Hendrick can even weld the rolled metal into a completed cylinder. Please ask your Customer Service Representative for particulars, depending upon possible circumference and material thickness limitations.

Shearing: Also known as “Die Cutting”, typically uses a straight blade of hardened tool steel which comes down with a perpendicular cutting force over a die edge and can be used to create custom widths, with or without margins, and free form shapes, with or without margins, ready for further manufacturing applications. Hendrick can supply Cut-to-Size Perforated Blanks, with margins and blank areas engineered into the piece, to your Print Specifications. Please discuss Margin Tolerances with your Customer Service Representative.

Sourcing of Outside Value – Added Services

You may have experienced some difficulty finding a Qualified Source for some process critical to your finished product ( Anodizing, Plating, Painting, etc. ) or you may have had to absorb additional (“Hidden“) costs to send your semi-finished parts to a service provider many miles from your plant for further finishing, and then “Live With Their Production Schedule“ at the expense of YOURS.

Because of its proximity to many suppliers to the metal working industry situated around Scranton, Pennsylvania, Hendrick can source value-added services on your behalf,; Anodizing, Painting, Plating, Electro-Polishing, Powder Coating, Heat-Treating, and more, so as to furnish a perforated part in varying stages of completion from the most basic “off the shelf“ perforated sheet to a “Near Net“ part ready for final assembly at your plant. Please “Work Out“ the particulars with your Hendrick Customer Service Representative.
